§ Mr. John Evansasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he can make an estimate of the increase in income tax which would be required if (a) the whole of teachers' salaries, (b) the total cost of the police force, (c) the total cost of the fire service, service were borne by central Government funds.
§ Dr. GilbertIf it were decided to raise additional amounts of income tax equal to that part of the cost of the services mentioned at present borne by local authorities, income tax rates would have to be increased by the following amounts: (a) teachers' salaries, 2p; (b) police force, 0.6p; (c) fire services, 0.15p.
