HC Deb 03 July 1974 vol 876 cc185-6W
Mr. Redmond

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science why he will not propose amending the system of grants to student unions so that they are expressly confined to the financing of sporting and other non-controversial cultural purposes using the money so saved to increase the individual student's grants and allow students themselves to pay for the organisation of political events.

Mr. Gerry Fowler

Student unions are organised and financed in many different ways and serve many different purposes. My right hon. Friend has not yet considered whether any changes need to be made in the present arrangements for their financing and he would not embark on any significant change without consulting the various interests concerned.
