HC Deb 03 July 1974 vol 876 cc187-8W
Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the estimated percentage reduction in use of petrol and oil by each of the three Services following the increase in fuel prices; and what is the estimated total additional cost to be met from the Defence Vote as a result of the increase.

Mr. John

Most of the measures to restrict the Service usage of all petroleum fuels introduced in November 1973 were extended after national restrictions on the supply of fuel were suspended at the end of April 1974. The minimum target for savings remains at 10 per cent. I am satisfied that each of the three Services is continuing to exercise the maximum economies consistent with safeguarding its operational capability and efficiency.

The additional cost to Defence Votes in 1974–75 for oil fuels, excluding lubricants, since the Estimates were prepared is assessed at £77 million.
