Mr. John Evans

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his estimate of the cost to central Government funds if the whole of teachers' salaries were borne by central Government funds.

Mr. Oakes

Approximately £568 million, based on the estimated expenditure for 1974–75. This assumes no change in the rate of Exchequer assistance through the rate support grant system towards local authority relevant expenditure on other services.
