HC Deb 02 July 1974 vol 876 cc125-6W
Mr. Kelley

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will state the output per manshift for all workers employed in the coal mining industry at the latest convenient date; and how this compares with similar figures for the coal-producing countries of the EEC.

Mr. Varley

Figures on average output per manshift overall and at the face in National Coal Board mines are published monthly inTrade and Industry. The latest published information is given at Table 6 on page 658 of the issue dated 27th June 1974. Figures of average output per manshift underground for the coal-producing countries of the EEC are given in "Energy Statistics 1973 No. 4" and in the EEC Monthly Coal Press Notice. The latest published figures for EEC countries together with the cor responding figure for the United Kingdom on an EEC basis are given below:

Average output per manshift underground in April 1974
tonnes
Germany 4.274
France 2.907
Netherlands 3.904
Belgium 2.520
United Kingdom 3.268

Care should be taken in comparing these figures because of differences between countries in physical and other conditions of mining, and in the methods of compilation.
