HC Deb 01 July 1974 vol 876 c14W
Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what percentage of the total supply of goods entering international trade are represented by (a) oil and petroleum products, (b) metals, and (c) other commodities.

Mr. Deakins

Of the total value of OECD countries' imports in 1972, petroleum and petroleum products accounted for 9.8 per cent., metalliferous ores and metal scrap for 2.6 per cent., other primary commodities for 24.1 per cent. Corresponding details are not available for world trade as a whole, but it is estimated that in 1972 imports by OECD countries accounted for about 75 per cent, by value of all countries' imports. In calculating the percentages quoted, petroleum and petroleum products have been taken as corresponding to division 33 of the Standard International Trade Classification, metalliferous ores and metal scrap to division 28, and other primary commodities to the remainder of sections 0 to 4 of that classification.
