HC Deb 01 July 1974 vol 876 c30W
Mr. Taverne

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the cost to the Exchequer in the last financial year for which figures are available of relief in respect of taxes on income for (a) mortgage interest payments, (b) life insurance premiums and (c) contributions towards pension and superannuation schemes.

Dr. Gilbert

For 1973–74 the estimated cost of tax relief on mortgage interest is £500 million and of relief on life assurance premiums £140 million. The latest year for which an estimate is available of the cost of income tax relief on contributions to pension and superannuation schemes is 1971–72, for which the estimate is £125 million.
