HC Deb 31 January 1974 vol 868 cc160-1W
Sir Gilbert Longden

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what would be the additional national insurance pension, single and married, if the national insurance contribution were raised by £1 a week.

Mr. Dean

If all contributions, including those for married women, were increased by an average of £1 a week, shared equally between employers and employees in the case of class 1 contributors, and on the assumption that there would be an Exchequer supplement of 18 per cent., the additional income would meet the cost of increasing retirement pensions by £3.60 (single) and £5.80 (married). If other national insurance benefits were also increased in proportion, the pension increase would be £2.60 (single) and £4.20 (married).
