Dame Patricia Hornsby-Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what was the average price range of Australian imported wool in 1971, 1972 and 1973 at any convenient date.

Sir G. Howe

Precise information is not available. In December 1971 the cif United Kingdom price of the highest quality regularly quoted grade of Australian wool—merino 70s on a dry-combed basis—averaged 80p per kilo. The lowest quality regularly quoted grade—crossbred 58s on an oil-combed basis—averaged about 64p per kilo. The corresponding figures for December 1972 were 202p and 163p, and for December 1973, 325p and 234p.
