asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what number of convictions was recorded in each of the years from 1970 to 1973 for the overloading of heavy goods vehicles; and what percentage of these was for overloading one axle only.

Prosecutions for overloading taken by DOE were as follows: 1970, 2707; 1971, 3192; 1972, 3066; 1973, 3,999.Consolidated figures from all sources for 197031–72 are available in "Offences Relating to Motor Vehicles" published annually by HMSO at the order of the House of Commons. I regret that figures for overloading of one axle only are not available.
