HL Deb 28 January 1974 vol 349 c161WA
LORD KENNET

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the number of buildings listed as being of architectural or historical interest which have been permitted to be demolished in each of the years since 1964.

BARONESS YOUNG

Until January 1, 1969, an owner of a listed building had only to give notice to the local planning authority if he proposed to demolish the building. No records were kept but it is estimated that some 400 listed buildings were lost in 1968. Since January 1, 1969, listed building consent has been required for demolition, and the figures for the subsequent years are as follows:

1969 269
1970 205
1971 205
1972 226

Figures for 1973 are not yet available.

The figures for demolition must be considered against the yearly increase in the number of listed buildings. Their cumulative totals have been as follows:

1969 118,583
1970 132,585
1971 142,379
1972 168,502
