HC Deb 24 January 1974 vol 867 cc330-1W
Mr. Brocklebank-Fowler

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if, in view of the world shortage of sugar and the increase in international sugar prices, he will take steps to increase the domestic sugar beet quota for 1974.

Mr Anthony Stodart

No. The United Kingdom domestic sugar quota for 1974 was settled during negotiations for accession to the EEC in the light of the internal requirements of the United Kingdom and of the Community ; these are unaffected by changes in world supplies or prices.

Subject to the availability of such things as seed and factory capacity, there is no limit to the amount of sugar beet which may be grown in Britain to make sugar for sale on the world market.
