HC Deb 24 January 1974 vol 867 cc333-4W
Mr. John Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will take steps designed to ensure that local education authorities do not economise in the present emergency situation by reducing the protein content of school meals or by substituting dried milk for fresh milk in schools.

Mr. Raison

Recommended nutritional standards for the school meal are set out in a departmental circular, of which I am sending the hon. Member a copy. One of these is that the protein content of the average meal shall include 18.5 grams of protein of animal origin.

Concerning milk, the current regulations permit an authority to provide full-cream dried milk prepared for drinking only when it is not reasonably practicable for the authority to provide liquid milk.

My right hon. Friend considers that these provisions fully meet the present situation. She has no plans for changing them or for taking any additional action.
