Mr. Meacher

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what has been the level of expenditure on research and development by private and governmental agencies, respectively, and as a percentage of gross national product, in the United Kingdom, the United States of America, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Japan, and Sweden for each year since 1960.

The information available for the United Kingdom is given in the table below, together with the information, comparable as far as possible, for other countries which is available from the international surveys conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
