HC Deb 23 January 1974 vol 867 cc293-4W
Mr. Crowder

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment, in view of the fact that the London borough of Hillingdon has twice refused to comply with the Government's request to reduce street lighting in the borough, in order to save energy, whether he will take further steps designed to produce this saving.

Mr. Shersby

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what discustions have taken place between his Department and the Hillingdon Council to achieve a saving of electricity by a reduction of street lighting ; and with what result.

Mr. Peyton

The necessary cuts have been implemented on trunk and metropolitan roads in Hillingdon. I have reminded the council of the need in the public interest to conserve energy, a need which is being observed by the overwhelming majority of lighting authorities throughout the country. Discussions with the council are continuing.
