asked the Minister of Energy how many million units of electricity per day were consumed in the month of January 1973 ; and how much coal is burnt in order to produce 1 million units of electricity.

The average daily rate of consumption of public supply electricity in January 1973 was 757 million kilowatt hours.

The amount of coal burned to generate a given quantity of electricity depends on the themal efficiency of the power station at which the electricity is generated ; on average, about 500 tons of coal had to be burned to generate I million kilowatt hours of electricity.
