asked the Secretary of State for Defence what state of alert was declared in the Royal Air Force around Christmas 1973; what numbers of officers, non-commissioned officers and airmen were involved; and what were the reasons therefor.

During the Christmas period the Royal Air Force, in common with the other Services, maintained, where appropriate, a state of increased vigilance against the possibility of terrorist activity. It would be contrary to normal practice to disclose any detailed information.
