HC Deb 04 February 1974 vol 868 c206W
22. Mr. Winterton

asked the Minister for Energy whether he has received the report of the Institution of Professional Civil Servants on possible alternatives to the American light water nuclear reactor; and what action he proposes in the light of its conclusions.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

Yes. My right hon. and noble Friend has discussed the report with representatives of the institution, and it has also been drawn to the attention of the Nuclear Power Advisory Board.

30. Sir J. Gilmour

asked the Minister for Energy what investigations are being made into the possibilities of building floating nuclear reactors for the generation of electricity; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Emery

None in this country.

33. Mr. Bishop

asked the Minister for Energy what representations have been made to him regarding nuclear reactor policy; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

Representations have been received from a number of organisations and individuals.

Mr. Wingfield Digby

asked the Minister for Energy what estimate he has made of the relative costs of constructing an HTR reactor and a Magnox-type fast breeder reactor of the same output.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

The gas-cooled fast reactor concept is still too early in its development for meaningful estimates of construction costs to be made. It is accordingly not possible to make a comparison with the cost of constructing a high temperature reactor.
