§ BARONESS YOUNGThe following Departments participated in the preparatory work for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora: Department of Education and Science, Home Office,704WA Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Department of the Environment, Customs and Excise, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Department of Trade and Industry.
The Natural Environment Research Council and the Nature Conservancy also participated. The preparation for the Convention extended over some years and it is not possible to give numbers of the officials engaged in the preparatory work.
Officials of the following Departments and the Nature Conservancy participated in the drafting of the Convention and attended the meetings in Washington which led to its signature: Department of Education and Science (2), Foreign and Commonwealth Office (2), Customs and Excise (1), Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1), Department of Environment (1), Nature Conservancy (1). In addition, the Scientific Counsellor, British Embassy, Washington, was in attendance and Sir Hugh Elliott attended as an I.U.C.N. observer.
