§ Mr. Carter-Jonesasked the Secretary of State for Industry if he will encourage the saving of waste paper by giving advice to the public on its sale value and on methods of disposing of it.
§ Mr. HefferThe Government are most anxious to encourage a long-term coordinated expansion of the collection and use of waste paper both as a valuable raw material and a foreign exchange saver. However, the market for waste paper is volatile and in August last an Advisory Group on Waste Paper Recycling was set up under the chairmanship of my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State for Industry to examine the whole question of increased recovery and use. At that time waste paper was in very short supply, but in recent weeks there has been a dramatic reversal of this position. We are in close touch with the industry and share its expectation that the current downturn will be only a temporary phenomenon.
