HC Deb 20 December 1974 vol 883 c696W
Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department to what extent there is reciprocity of voting rights between the United Kingdom and the Irish Republic.

Dr. Summerskill

Citizens of the Republic of Ireland who are resident in this country on the qualifying date and are otherwise qualified, and who are not subject to any legal incapacity to vote, may vote in parliamentary elections in the United Kingdom and in local government elections in Great Britain. British citizens resident in Eire may vote only at local government elections in that country. These provisions are not based on reciprocity; the franchise is a matter for the law of each country.
