HC Deb 20 December 1974 vol 883 c715W
Mr. MacCormick

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the total slaughterhouse capacity in Scotland; and what it was five and 10 years previously.

Mr. William Ross

Slaughterhouse operators are not required to provide information about the slaughtering capacity of their premises. Total slaughtering capacity in Scotland in 1973 was, however, estimated at 2,276,625 cattle units. Comparable estimates for five and 10 years previously are not available.

Throughput of cattle units in 1965, the first year for which figures are readily available, was 1,428,089, in 1970 1,525,985 and in 1973 1,536,376.
