HC Deb 20 December 1974 vol 883 cc674-5W
Mr. Penhaligon

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many floodlights are installed on motorways.

Mr. Carmichael

Floodlights are not used for motorway lighting. It is estimated that about 21,000 purpose-designed road lighting lanterns are in use on the Department's motorways in England.

Mr. Penhaligon

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment for how many hours per week the motorways are illuminated by floodlight in December.

Mr. Carmichael

Road lighting lanterns on the Department's motorways in England are controlled by photo-electric units, which respond to the ambient light levels. It is estimated that the lighting hours per week in December will be of the order of 110 hours.

Mr. Penhaligon

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the power used in megawatt/hours providing floodlights on motorways during a week in December.

Mr. Carmicbael

It is estimated that the energy consumed in lighting the Department's motorways in England is 500–600 megawatt hours per week in the month of December.
