HC Deb 19 December 1974 vol 883 cc587-8W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will list the power stations in Ulster and indicate the fuel used by each; and what new power stations are presently planned or under construction.

Mr. Orme

The information is as follows:

Type of fuel
Ballylumford "A", Co Antrim Coal
Ballylumford "B", Co Antrim Oil
Coolkerragh, Co Londonderry Oil
Power Station West, Belfast Coal
Power Station East, Belfast Coal

Although coal-fired stations outnumber oil-fired, at least 80 per cent, of the electricity generated in Northern Ireland is generated by oil.

An oil-burning station is under construction at Kilroot, Co. Antrim.

Plant is being manufactured for a pumped water storage scheme planned for the South Down area. Preliminary planning for a nuclear station to succeed Kilroot is now in hand.
