HC Deb 19 December 1974 vol 883 cc595-6W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what has been the real increase in spending on public sector housing and private housing, respectively, in England and Wales when comparing 1973–74 with 1963–64.

Mr. Kaufman

Public sector spending on housing in England and Wales, including new building, land purchase, subsidies, local authority home loans and improvement grants paid to private owners, rose from £542 million in 1963–64 to £2,030 million in 1973–74. In real terms expenditure approximately doubled. Comprehensive estimates of spending on private housing in England and Wales could not be made except at disproportionate cost.
