Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many places there are in residential homes for the mentally handicapped in England in each of the regions, and in each local authority; and if she will express the totals per 1,000 of population.

Such residential homes are sometimes also called hostels. The infor- mation requested is, accordingly, as given in my reply to the hon. Member's Question on 4th December.—[Vol. 882. c. 509–13.]

A list showing the net number of places in day centres for the mentally ill available at 31st March 1973 to each English local authority, and expressed as a rate per 1,000 of the population, is being prepared and will be sent to the hon. Member.
