Mr. Cartwright

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what plans he has for increases in the needs allowance for rent and rate rebates and rent allowances to take account of the effects of inflation and increased social security benefits.

After consulting the Advisory Committee on Rent Rebates and Rent Allowances, my right hon. Friend proposes to increase the needs allowances by the following amounts from next April:

  • £1.60 a week for single persons.
  • £2.50 a week for a married couple or one parent family.
  • £0.50 a week for each dependent child.
