§ Mr. Rostasked the Secretary of State for Energy what is his estimate of the annual energy saving that will result from the proposed restrictions on external display advertising during daylight hours; and what further saving he estimates would be achieved if he imposed a 20 per cent. cutback in public street and motorway lighting.
§ Mr. EadieThe extent to which external display advertising is practised during daylight hours varies widely and so it is not possible to make a precise estimate of the energy which will be saved by the proposed restriction. A 20 per cent. cutback in public street and motorway lighting would, it is estimated, produce a saving of about 350 GWH or nearly 0.2 per cent. of all the electricity consumed, which at average generation efficiency would result in a saving of about 150,000 tons of oil or oil equivalent per year.
§ Mr. Rostasked the Secretary of State for Energy what is his estimate of annual energy savings that will result from the restriction on heating levels in buildings to 68 deg. Fahrenheit; and what would be the saving at 66 deg.

§ Mr. EadieA reduction of 1 deg. Fahrenheit in building temperatures might be expected to save more than half a million tons of oil or oil equivalent per year. It is, however, not possible to make a realistic estimate of the savings due to a 68 deg. Fahrenheit or 66 deg. Fahrenheit temperature limit, because the present temperature levels, which will have been affected by fuel and energy price increases, are not known.
