HC Deb 17 December 1974 vol 883 cc428-9W
Mr. Mikardo

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) whether he will, for each of the services aided under Sections 39(1) and 20 of the Transport Act 1968, give figures showing what part of the grant for 1973 was in respect of specific operating costs, of provision for the long-term replacement and renewal of assets, interest on capital, the usage of facilities and overheads used jointly with other services, and administrative costs;

(2) whether he will give the revenue directly attributable during 1973 to each of the services that were aided under Sections 39(1) and 20 of the Transport Act 1968.

Mr. Carmichael

I regret that this information is not available.

Mr. Mikardo

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will, by providing details for 1973, bring up to date the figure for British Rail's general receipts given in paragraph 3.13 of its annual report for 1969.

Mr. Carmichael

I understand from the British Railways Board that, owing to a reclassification, a precise equivalent of the 1969 figure is not available. On the new basis the figure for 1969 would be £27.5 million, and the figure for 1973 is £35 million.

Mr. Mikardo

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will, by providing statistics for the years 1968– 73, bring up to date the figure for the tonnage of cement carried by British Rail which was given in paragraph 69 of the board's annual report for 1964.

Mr. Carmichael

I understand from the British Railways Board that the figures are as follows, in millions of tons:

1968 3.2
1969 3.2

1964 1973 Average annual percentage change
Rail carryings in millions of tons of:
Iron ore 19.8 14.9 —2.49
Lime and limestone 6.1 1.9 —5.99
Scrap 6.0 3.9 —3.38
Pig iron 2.2 1.5 —3.11
Semi-manufactures 4.2 12.3 —1.62
Iron and steel products (revenue carryings only) 10.4
