Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what percentage of university students drops out after one year or less; and how this compares with the figure 10 years ago.

The latest available estimate is that in 1971–72 the drop-out rate for full-time university undergraduates in their first year was 7 per cent. excluding those who changed to part-time attendance. The most nearly comparable estimate for 10 years ago was also about 7 per cent.
