asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many places there are in residential homes for the mentally handicapped in Wales and in each local authority; and if he will express these rates per 1,000 of population.

In the reply which I gave to the hon. Member on 5th December 1974—[Vol. 882, c. 637–8.]—I listed the homes and hostels provided by local authorities in Wales for the mentally handicapped. In this context homes and hostels are synonymous.

Ten. Four are provided by the Gwent County Council, at

  • "Arosfa", Blaina.
  • "Brondeg", Blackwood.
  • "Twyncarn House", Cwmcarn.
  • "Widdershins", Griffithstown.

Six are provided as part of the hospital services, at

  • Maelor General Hospital, Wrexham,
  • West Wales General Hospital, Glangwili.
  • "Heddfan", Swansea.
  • "Westfa", Swansea.
  • "Belmont", Caerleon.
  • "Teefan", Whitchurch, Cardiff.

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is the total number of places in Wales and in each local authority in day centres for the mentally ill; and if he will express these totals per 1,000 of population.

There are 110 places for the mentally ill in day centres and 547 places in units attached to hospitals in Wales. This corresponds to a rate of 0.24 per 1,000 population. The geographical distribution is given in the following table:
