HC Deb 13 December 1974 vol 883 c284W
Mr. Craigen

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection when it is hoped to complete the change-over in the retail industry from imperial to metric measures; and if she is satisfied with the current rate of progress.

Mr. Alan Williams

There are no powers to require the retail sector to change, but the voluntary change in manufacturing industries is bringing more and more metric consumer goods into the shops. Under the Weights and Measures Act some goods may only be sold in prescribed imperial quantities; some orders have been made, and others are planned, authorising metric quantities in addition. Consultations with industry and consumer interests are continuing to determine the appropriate pace for change.
