Mr. John Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Trade (1) what host Government grants, aids, tax concessions or other financial assistance are available to foreign shipowners having ships built in United Kingdom shipyards.

(2) what United Kingdom Government grants, aids, tax concessions or other financial assistance are available to foreign shipowners having ships built in United Kingdom shipyards.

Mr. Deakins

Foreign shipowners having ships built in United Kingdom shipyards are eligible for ECGD-backed export credit, within the framework of an OECD agreement. Credit is available for up to 70 per cent. of a ship's cost, and payable over seven years at 7½ per cent. interest. British shipowners having ships built in foreign shipyards will, in general, enjoy similiar terms from host Governments.

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what host Government grants, aids, tax concessions or other financial assistance are available to British shipowners having ships repaired in ship repair yards other than in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Deakins

Foreign shipowners having ships repaired in United Kingdom shipyards are eligible for ECGD-backed export credit of up to five years at 7 per cent interest. Similar facilities are, in general, available to British shipowners having ships repaired in foreign yards.
