Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will compare the percentage of all schoolchildren at local authority schools taking O and A-level examinations in 1963 and 1973.

Mr. Armstrong

The number of candidates from local authority schools, expressed as a percentage of the relevant age groups, increased from 21.7 per cent. in 1963 to 31.1 per cent. in 1973 for O-level and from 5.2 to 8.5 per cent. for A-level.
