HC Deb 12 December 1974 vol 883 c217W
46. Mr. Stanbrook

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the average number of magistrates' courts sitting daily in Greater London: how many of these are functioning with lay magistrates and how many with metropolitan stipendiary magistrates; and how many qualified magistrates' clerks are available to staff these courts.

Mr. Alexander W. Lyon

The average number of magistrates' courts sitting daily in Greater London is about 94, of which about 25 are in the Inner London area.

Stipendiary magistrates sit only in the Inner London area, where lay magistrates participate in about one-third of the sittings held. They generally sit without a stipendiary magistrate but sit with a stipendiary magistrate in domestic courts.

The total number of chief clerks and justices' clerks in the Greater London area is about 60. Additionally, about 150 court clerks are available.
