Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will give for the latest and most convenient stated date the total number of persons who have died and those who have been injured due in any way to matters connected with the Irish problem.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

From 1st August 1969 to 30th November 1974, 1,134 people died in Northern Ireland as a result of terrorist activity. Information concerning injuries before 1971 is not readily available but from 1st January 1971 to 30th November 1974 12,595 people were injured.

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many victims of assassinations this year were described in newspaper death notices as members of the IRA (Provisional and Official); and how many were given IRA-type funerals.

During 1974 one assassination victim in Northern Ireland was described in newspaper death notices as a member of the official IRA and was given an IRA-type funeral.

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many cases in which people were shot in the knee-caps took place in Northern Ireland between 14th August 1969 and 31st December 1973, and during 1974, respectively; what was the date of the first such incident; and how many victims were Roman Catholics and how many were Protestants.
