Dr. Summerskill

In England and Wales the average running cost per day for probation hostels and homes and bail hostels is £5.41. No separate figure for bail hostels is available.

Mr. Grylls

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the current average cost per day of maintaining an accused person awaiting trial in a prison.

Dr. Summerskill

It is not practicable to isolate the cost of keeping particular groups of prisoners in custody but we estimate that the average daily cost of keeping a prisoner, whether convicted or unconvicted, in the present financial year is about £8.
