HC Deb 11 December 1974 vol 883 cc200-1W
Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many Regular infantry, artillery and Royal Armoured Corps operational units of battalion or regimental strength have not served in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Robert C. Brown

Eight infantry, three artillery and two armoured major units have not served in Northern Ireland since August 1969.

Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether, in his defence review, he assumed that the Army's strength in Northern Ireland up to 1984 would remain at its present figure; and if not what changes he took into account.

Mr. Robert C. Brown

The Army force level in Northern Ireland depends on the situation there at the time, but I would refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave the hon. and gallant Member for Winchester (Rear-Admiral Morgan-Giles) on Monday 9th December.
