Mr. Spearing

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services which major schemes for new or substantially rebuilt district general hospitals have been approved by her Department in the North-East Metropolitan Regional Health Authority area since 1965; and which are inside and which outside the Greater London area.

Since 1965 major building schemes have been carried out or approved for inclusion in the long-term district general hospital programme at the following hospitals now within the area of the North-East Thames Regional Health Authority:

Within Greater London

  • Barking
  • St. Bartholomew's
  • Newham
  • North Middlesex
  • Oldchurch
  • Royal Free
  • University College
  • Whipps Cross
  • Whittington
  • London

Outside Greater London

  • Basildon
  • Colchester
  • Broomfield
  • Princess Alexandra, Harlow
  • Orsett

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the population resident in the area of the North-East Metropolitan Regional Health Authority resident in Greater London; and how many members of that authority have their principal residence inside and outside the Greater London Council area, respectively.

The population in the area of the North-East Thames Regional Health Authority on the latest estimate is 3,755,960. Of these, 2,358,120 are in Greater London. Six members of the authority have their principal residence inside Greater London, and 11 outside.
