HC Deb 11 December 1974 vol 883 cc188-9W
Mr. Luard

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the proportion of invalid tricycles involved in road accidents in 1973 to the total number of such vehicles on the road, and the corresponding proportion of passenger cars.

Mr. Alfred Morris

Accident statistics are analysed by reference to the year from October to September. At 30th September 1973 there were 21,574 three-wheelers issued by the Department available for use on the road—including 2,300 in the reserve fleet, loaned temporarily for varying periods—and 8,133 cars. During the year ending 30th September 1973 there were 4,914 reported incidents involving three-wheelers and 1,577 involving cars. Of these 2,761 and 1,093 respectively were collisions with other vehicles. Not all these occurred on the public highway.
