HC Deb 10 December 1974 vol 883 cc149-50W
Mr. Rossi

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what alternative adequate sites known to his Department are available for the disposal of controlled waste in the event of the closure of that at Pitsea, Essex.

Mr. Denis Howell,

pursuant to his reply [OFFICIAL REPORT, 10th December 1974; Vol. 883 c. 14],gave the following information:

The Department does not maintain details of the day-to-day manning of, or operational control over, facilities which might be regarded as safe for the purposes of disposing of waste, particularly that arising from industrial sources. This is a matter for the local statutory authorities, which will be aware, among other things, of the capacity for the reception of further wastes at such sites which are considered adequate. The relevant local authorities have available details of the review of facilities carried out at the Department's request under Circular 37/72. These details include a desk appreciation of the safety of facilities, having regard to the nature of wastes being tipped, by the Institute of Geological Sciences and the appropriate water authority.
