HC Deb 10 December 1974 vol 883 cc81-2W
25. Mrs. Chalker

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many NHS patients were treated in private hospitals and private clinics, and at what cost to public funds, in the latest year for which figures are available.

Mrs. Castle

At the end of 1973, 3,400 beds in private or voluntary hospitals and nursing homes were occupied by National Health Service patients; during 1973 just under 21,300 National Health Service patients were discharged from, or died in, such beds and about 43,700 new National Health Service out-patients were treated at such hospitals. The total cost was £7.7 million.
