HC Deb 09 December 1974 vol 883 cc49-51W
Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many houses in Scotland were owner-occupied, private rented and public rented, respectively, at the most recent date for which figures are available.

Mr. William Ross

The latest information is derived from the April 1971 census:

Owner-occupied 493,000
Privately rented 192,000
Rented from public authorities 900,000

The number of houses subject to other forms of tenure is estimated at 96,000.

Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many of the private rented houses in Scotland were let furnished and unfurnished at the most recent date for which figures are available.

Mr. William Ross

The latest information is from the April 1971 census:

Privately rented unfurnished 146,000
Privately rented furnished 46,000

Average Annual Standard Rent
Year (at 28th November each year) Local Authority SHHA New Town Development Corporations
£ £ £
1968 54.74 57.25 106.33
1969 64.69 75.64 118.06
1970 74.27 92.36 133.46
1971 79.29 105.05 139.96
1972 95.68 116.64 164.51
1973 128.28 139.23 192.05

Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many of the private rented unfurnished houses in Scotland were subject to "fair rents" at the most recent date for which figures are available; and how many were still controlled.

Mr. William Ross

To date about 77,000 of the private unfurnished tenancies in Scotland have had "fair rents" registered. The number of dwellings which are still subject to controlled tenancies cannot be estimated with accuracy but it is thought that it is unlikely to exceed 5,000.

Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many private rented houses in Glasgow and Scotland, respectively, were let on the basis of rent agreements registered with rent officers.

Mr. William Ross

To 30th November 1974 rent officers in Scotland had accepted, as not exceeding a fair rent, 3,069 rent agreements which were lodged with them. In Glasgow city they had accepted 2,689.

Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish a table showing the average rents charged by each Scottish local authority for the council houses in its area.

Mr. William Ross

I would refer the hon. Member to the publication "Rents of Public Authority Houses and Rent Rebates and Allowances in Scotland 1973" (Cmnd. 5573).

Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the average rent of council homes, SSHA houses and new town development corporation houses, respectively, in the most recent annual period for which figures are available ; and what were the comparable figures in each of the previous five years.

Mr. William Ross

Following is the information:

Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the average rent fixed by rent officers and rent assessment committees, respectively, in the most recent annual period for which figures are available.

Mr. William Ross

The following information relates to 1973 and covers registrations by rent officers which were subsequently referred to rent assessment committees:

£
Average rent officer rent 129
Average rent assessment committee rent 141

Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many cases were referred to rent assessment committees in each of the past three years ; and in how many of these cases, respectively, the committees increased, reduced, or confirmed the rents fixed by rent officers.

Mr. William Ross

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Glasgow, Mary hill (Mr. Craigen) on 18th June 1974.—[Vol. 875, c.138.]
