asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many hostel places there are for the mentally handicapped in each local authority area and in Wales, expressing the total per 1,000 population.

There were 435 places in local authority maintained homes and hostels for the mentally handicapped in Wales on 31st March 1974 corresponding to a rate of 0.16 per 1,000 population. The geographical distribution of these places is shown in the following table:

There were 89 places in local authority maintained homes specifically for the physically handicapped in Wales on 31st March 1974 corresponding to a rate of 003 per 1,000 population. The number of places available and the rates per 1,000 for the three counties in which these homes were located are given below:
