Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will express as a percentage of deaths per 1,000 employees the fatalities of North Sea divers, trawlermen and miners.

Mr. John Smith

I have been asked to reply.

Precisely comparable figures of the fatality rates for these occupations are not available. For the years 1971 to 1973 and the 10 months to the end of October 1974 the approximate fatality rate per 1,000 employed were:

Year Divers* Trawlermen Miners
1971 3.33 2.71 0.24
1972 2.50 1.14 0.22‡
1973 4.00 2.90 0.29
To end October 1974 5.00 11.45† 0.13‡
* Includes fatalities in both the North Sea and Celtic Sea areas of the United Kingdom Continental Shelf.
† Includes 36 men lost on the trawler "Gaul".
‡ These periods were affected by strikes in the coal industry in those periods.
