39. Mr. John Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the total number of people employed in the shipbuilding, ship repairing and marine engineering industries in the United Kingdom to the latest available date; and what were the relevant figures in 1964, 1954 and 1944, respectively.

Following is the available information.

Comprehensive industrial analyses of the numbers employed are made for each mid-year, the most recent final figures being for June 1973. There are also provisional estimates for each month, the latest being for September 1974. The following table also shows the provisional estimates for June 1974 and final mid-year figures for selected preceding years, the earliest being for 1948, when the current series of employment statistics began.
