Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the percentage of the made population aged between 18 and 45 years serving in (a) the Regular forces, (b) the Territorial and Reserve forces; and what are the comparable figures for our NATO allies and for the Soviet Union.

The figures for the United Kingdom are as follows:

(a) Total United Kingdom male population aged between 18–45 9,831,000
(b) Total males in regular forces aged between 18–45 294,485
(c) = (b) as a percentage of (a) 3.0 per cent.
(d) Total males of all ages in the Regular and Voluntary Reserve and the Auxiliary Forces (no age breakdown is available) 243,407
(e) = (d) as a percentage of (a) 2.5 per cent.

Figures for our NATO allies and for the Soviet forces are not available.
