HC Deb 03 December 1974 vol 882 cc404-5W
52. Mr. Crawford

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what steps he is taking to redress the imbalance in the average weekly household income which in 1973 was £56.54 in the South-East of England, £49.41 in the whole of the United Kingdom, and £46.87 in Scotland.

Mr. Foot

It is the policy of the Government to increase the level of prosperity of all parts of the country and, through an active regional policy, to improve the relative position of those areas which are currently less prosperous. Latest figures show that total weekly household incomes and average gross weekly earnings for men were higher in Scotland than in four of the eight regions in England.
