Mr. Alec Jones

I would refer the hon. Member to my reply to him on 21st November.—[Vol. 881, c.516.]

Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the total number of places at residential homes for the physically handicapped in England, in each region, and each local authority, expressed per 1,000 population.

Mr. Alfred Morris

There are 29 local authority homes specifically for the physically handicapped. The number of places available in them is 933. Residential accommodation is also provided by local authorities in other homes, including voluntary and private homes, and at 31st March 1974 there were in total 4,851 persons under the age of 65 classified as "physically handicapped"—excluding the blind and the deaf—being accommodated by or on behalf of local authorities.

Information about overall provision for the physically handicapped in the private and voluntary sector, and in individual local authority areas, is not available in the form requested.
