HC Deb 02 December 1974 vol 882 c370W
Mrs. Winifred Ewing

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what sums have been given to the Scottish Arts Council in each of the last 10 years.

Mr. Hugh Jenkins

I have been asked to reply.

The Government give a single grant to the Arts Council of Great Britain. The council determines, in the light of its consideration of the needs of its clients, what sums should be spent by the Scottish and Welsh Arts Councils. The following table analyses expenditure in England, Scotland and Wales which the council has authorised over the last 10 years. The table shows that expenditure in Scotland has increased by 838 per cent. over the period 1964–74 compared with 434 per cent. for Great Britain as a whole.
